OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 for Mac OS X (X11): Legacy Build

Notes

  • The links below are arranged by region. All the mirrors listed carry OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 for MacOS X (in English) and several localized versions. While stable enough for usage and offering the majority of the functionality to OpenOffice.org on other platforms, this is not a traditional MacOS X user-friendly application. The X11 release is about functionality, not looks. This build is meant for the Darwin community and Unix-savvy MacOS X user community and forming a platform for us to build the Quartz and Aqua tracks for the traditional Mac user.
  • The 1.1.2 release runs on the Mac OS X 10.2.x and higher operating systems. It requires additional software to run, such as the XWindows windowing system from the XFree86 project (included in the install package). Everyone is invited to join the project and lend a hand!
  • To join in the effort, please click on the " Join this project" link. If you are not a registered member of OpenOffice.org, you can join now.
  • If you have difficulties installing, please visit the various support forums to get a helping hand.

Choose the mirror site closest to you. The link goes (or should go) directly to the application file; a click should start the download of the dmg.bz2 installation file.

README. Read it. The README provides additional late-breaking information and important instructions for installing or upgrading OpenOffice.org.

This installer includes all other software packages you will need in order to use OpenOffice.org. You do not need any additional installers.

About X11

X11 is a windowing system used on Linux and other U*ix platforms. A windowing system provides the core functionality needed to construct graphical user interfaces and interact with the user. Because of Mac OS X's BSD roots, it is possible to use X11 on Darwin and Mac OS X. This makes it possible to port U*nix applications that use X11, such as OpenOffice.org, to run on Mac OS X.

If you're a Mac user just getting started out with X11, read the Using X11 section of the online Documentation installed by the OpenOffice.org installer to learn more about using X11. Apple has also posted a developer-oriented introduction to Configuring and Running X11 Applications that you may find helpful. It introduces basic terminology and tools that you may encounter when searching for support. With just a little bit of effort you can get comfortable enough to explore the wide range of open source and free software that can run on top of X11!

The OpenOffice.org installer includes the open source XFree86 4.3 X11 windowing system and offers a choice of window managers (how the windows look). If you choose, you may also use Apple X11 to gain tighter integration with the Dock and other MacOS X features.

Start OpenOffice.org Finder Integration

The MacOS X installer includes version 1.0b9 of Start OpenOffice.org [geocities.com] by Terry Teague. This project provides a double-clickable way of launching both XDarwin and OpenOffice.org and provides Finder integration for double-clicking OpenOffice.org files from the Finder to open them, customizable icons for OpenOffice.org files, and other goodness. Visit the link above to keep informed as to further updates to Start OpenOffice.org for printing support and configuration as well as integration with other X servers!

Having Problems Installing?

If you're having problems successfully running an installer downloaded from one of the mirrors listed above, attempt to perform the following:

  1. Make sure you have all of the required other open source projects installed properly. You will need XFree86, an X server if you do not choose to use XDarwin, libfreetype 6.2 or newer, and dlcompat.
  2. Check to see if you have the file libdl.dylib and libdl.0.dylib in the /usr/local/lib directory. This is where the installer expects the file to exist and is the default install location for the OSXGNU dlcompat installer. If you have installed dlcompat through another method (e.g.Fink), you will need to either run the OSXGNU dlcompat installer, or you must find your libdl.dylib library and copy it into the /usr/local/lib directory and create a symlink to libdl.0.dylib in that location.
  3. Check to make sure you have sufficient permissions to write into the destination directory. The installer will place OpenOffice.org into Applications by default.
  4. Search through the online forums to see if someone else has experienced your install problems. Someone else may have already solved it, so go check!

Thank you again for your interest in OpenOffice.org.
